There’s a distance between model and subject that I have attempted to bridge by literally making the subject part of my process. In this project, I have taken a projection lens and filled it with hair from both myself and Sidney, the subject of these photos. The lens, of course, is severely diminished in its optical capacity, both in resolution and light-gathering, but what light passes through it must pass through the discarded parts of our bodies. In this way, these photographs are more intimately connected to who we are – photographer and subject – than they could ever be otherwise.
